| Recognition International Inc., a firm that
manufactures, installs and services electronic document-processing
solutions, thanked its customers for completing its semi-annual
customer-satisfaction surveys by sending them foreign currency. The
firm selected foreign currency to tie into its name change from
Recognition Equipment to Recognition International. Customers who
returned the surveys received a thank-you card noting, "Your
direct feedback allows us the opportunity to understand exactly what
our customers' needs are, and address them," accompanied by a
note of foreign currency. Enclosed in each card was a Brazilian
1,000-cruzado bill and a business-card-sized explanation, which
included the bill's country of origin, equivalent current value in
U.S. funds and any other interesting historical facts. A second
thank-you mailing was a 100-leva note from Bulgaria and a third
included a 100-ruble bill from Russia with the accompanying card
informing recipients that it represented one of the first notes issued
by the new Russian republic. That particular mailing had generated a
43-percent response. The company reported numerous calls from
customers commenting on the currency, which it determined to be
cost-effective. The company generally received a 40-percent or over
response rate to its surveys, which it attributed, in part, to using
the currency, as well as other thank-you gifts such as pens, coffee
mugs and golf towels in previous mailings. Recognition International
planned additional foreign-currency mailings in the future. |

As part of its annual sales meeting, a
manufacturer awarded mementos of the event to its attending
salesforce. Since the salesforce spent most of its time traveling,
the company distributed imprinted travel kits to help their reps
cope with life on the road. The suction-cup-mounted 5 3/8-inch-by-5
3/8-inch vinyl kit contained a fog-resistant mirror and clear
storage pocket. For men, it provided a great accessory for shaving
while showering; for women, the kit proved helpful for applying
makeup almost anywhere. The kit was also useful in a gym locker or
attached to a car window.

| Melitta North America used 1,000 10-minute phone cards
as an incentive to distributors for selling Melitta coffee and
coffee accessories. The cards included extensive voice branding in
which interesting facts about Melitta and its products greeted card
users. With the Melitta logo prominently displayed, the cards
featured the promise, "At Melitta, Coffee and Profits are our
Specialty." The card included Melitta's toll-free number to
prompt distributors to call Melitta directly for information. |
