Pirates |
| The goal was to reduce manufacturing costs a minimum
of 8 percent. A pirate theme, "Pieces of Eight," was
chosen for an employee suggestion program that reached employees'
homes with four separate mailings at two-week intervals, each
containing specialties. The mailings were aimed at four
cost-reduction areas: productivity, quality control, maintenance and
waste reduction. Accompanying the mailings were three-inch celluloid
buttons, litterbags, coin purses and refrigerator magnets. The
specialties were chosen for likely use at home, in the car, on the
desk or in the pocket as ubiquitous reminders of the promotion. For
each accepted suggestion, employees were awarded a gift certificate
and a roll-label pirate coin replica. Employees could attach the
coin labels to the buttons they received in the first mailing to
show their participation. Once they had accumulated two or more
coins, they could redeem them for prizes. The company received an
average of 2.4 acceptable suggestions per employee, which generated
$23 million in savings for the first quarter alone, the division's
manufacturing director stated. |

Lockheed Martin Missles & Space wanted to
honor employees who worked on its CORONA program, which built the
first American imaging reconaissance satellites 35 years ago. To
mark the anniversary of the event and its classification, the firm
especially targeted a group of "pioneer" employees whose
leadership helped make the program a success. At the celebration
event itself, pioneers were given "buckets" that resembled
a piece of the satellite, along with a photo from it. All CORONA
employees got a mug with another photo that became visible as the
coffee was consumed, symbolic of the declassification. All who
attended received a key chain with a satellite photo. The workers,
it was reported, felt a great sense of accomplishment, and many
employees got a first insight into the true significance of the
project.

Memento/Souvenir |
| When a major corporation negotiated an acquisition
agreement with another firm, the corporation planned an official
ceremony to sign the papers. Senior management and the board of
directors from each company were scheduled to attend. To add an extra
touch to the proceedings, the agreement was signed with a special pen,
as the way politicians often sign legislation. With the product only
going to a select few, the corporation wanted to make an impression.
To do so, it distributed a pen that came equipped with two types of
styli - ballpoint and fountain with a gold-plated nib - rolled into
one. |
