| When an ecology preservation group used a direct-mail
program to attract new members, it included an environmentally related
gift to emphasize its message. The group sent its prospects a product
that incorporated plant seeds on a small stick. The product's
instructions told the recipient to select a location receiving six to
eight hours of sunlight per day, plant the entire stick in soil, water
it on a frequent basis and wait. In two weeks, the grower could have
flowers 18 inches in height. The flowers served as a pleasant and
constant reminder of the organization that lasted long after initial
contact faded. |

When a shopping mall sponsored a "drunk
driving prevention week," featuring displays from area
organizations, police departments and rescue units, a local drunk
driving awareness group also participated. The group wanted to
provide the public with some sort of tangible reminder about the
seriousness of drunk driving. To emphasize its message, the group
distributed a clear pen, whose object was to keep a little pellet
between two small lines - nearly impossible for a person who is
drunk. Although the pen was entertaining, the group's imprint
suggested that drunk driving is no laughing matter.

| Volunteers in the program were given cloisonné
"police badges" to identify them as participants. A
tighter-knit unit was created, spurred by a sense of belonging
generated by the badges. |
