Contest |
| To ensure that as many people as possible saw the
top-floor suites during the hotel's grand opening celebration, an
airplane flying contest was conducted out of the top-floor windows.
Attendees competed to see who could get their imprinted balsa-wood
glider closest to the target painted on the hotel parking lot. The
promotion was considered a hit, with many guests enjoying the event. |

To promote a new airline shuttle service,
groups of travel agents were invited during the three-month
promotion to breakfasts with airline representatives. An appropriate
message, "Five winners non-stop daily to Reno starting May
1," was imprinted on advertising specialties that could be
associated with the gambling city's atmosphere. These included
balloons and miniature poker decks. After the shuttle service was
explained, guests also received small paper magnets and stickers
which could be affixed in their offices. Advertising specialties
were also distributed on follow-up calls by salespeople wearing
T-shirts (copy: "We roll five every day") and neckties.
Outdoor and radio advertising were also used. The promotion was said
to have helped produce an excellent 87 percent load factor for the
new shuttle service.

Open House Reminders |
| A motel sought to generate business via key travel
agants and tour brokers. The advertiser and other travel related firms
invited 600-700 agents and brokers throughout the United States,
Canada and the Caribbean to participate in 10-day group excursions to
the central Florida motel. As the agents checked in, they were asked
to sign a blank 3" x 5" card (no explanation was given). The
signatures obtained were fired into a ceramic pencil caddy bearing the
motel's logo. Following the tour, these advertising specialties were
mailed to participants, along with a note of thanks. More than 100
agents sent written thanks for the specialties and an exceptional
amount of new business was attributed to the excursions. |
